Community Wireless Summit visits OJC
OJC Technologies, the development home of the Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network (CUWiN) was host to over 100 engineers and journalists at the first ever C-U Wireless Summit. Over the course of three days, representatives from an array of organizations, including the Associated Press, the May Report, the San Diego Tribal Digital Village, and the San Francisco Bay Area Wireless group, converged at the Siebel Center on campus to learn from CUWiN and each other.
The Summit supported the work of community wireless networks by facilitating the critical alliance of technologists and policy experts and by encouraging participants to discuss the great variety of challenges and opportunities facing their initiatives. The Summit drew not only a wide variety of attendees, but also an impressive palate of speakers, including Robert W. McChesney, Founder and President of Free Press; Richard MacKinnon, Founder and CEO of LESSNetworks and the leader of the Austin Wireless City Project; and Tim Pozar, Technical Director of Electronic Frontier Foundation.
On the opening night of the conference, attendees were invited to the offices of OJC Technologies for an open house of the CUWiN research and development lab. OJC Technologies specializes in design, web development, and programming for universities, entrepreneurs, businesses, and non-profits. In addition, it is the birthplace and home of the CUWiN development team.
