Bill Entwistle

Senior Software Engineer

Bill has 25 years of experience developing software in a variety of environments: business, education, training, and research. Although he is able to code in just about any language, his areas of expertise include C/C++, Perl/CGI, HTML, XML/XSL, TUTOR, and TenCORE.

For UIC's News Bureau, Bill designed and wrote a Perl/CGI/DBI web application which is used by the general public to read UIC news releases, by the news media to search for stories and professors to interview, and by News Bureau staff to create, edit, review, and release news stories.

For the Illinois Math and Science Academy, Bill maintained and made major improvements to a web-based search engine written in Perl and C++. Improvements include: term weighting and relevance ranking of search results; additional search capabilities (phrase searches, context searches, searches via "+" and "-" operators); a CGI web interface for entering search queries; an indexer program for creating the inverted index database.

Bill resides in Urbana with his wife and two children. His current hobbies include playing piano, listening to jazz, attending garage sales, fixing things, doing "kid stuff" with his children, and observing nature.
