Building Consensus with Multiple Stakeholders

Client

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is the largest university in Chicago.

Challenge

UIC wanted a new main site that would appeal to prospective students. They also wanted redesigns of their Admissions, Financial Aid, Records and Registration, News Bureau, and Graduate College sites. The new sites had to be easier to maintain, be accessible to users with disabilities, and server existing students, faculty and staff. The project required building concensus among a broad group of over 30 stakeholders.

Solution

Guided by a suite of usability tests, OJC's design solution involved a thorough examination and restructuring of the site's content and information architecture. OJC also established university-wide design and web standards which are currently used throughout the UIC system of sites.

UIC experienced a 28% increase in their website hit rate after the new site went live. The site has received the International Assocation of Business Communicator's Spectra Award and the Publicity Club of Chicago's Silver Trumpet Award. The site was also highlighted as a model educational site by EDUCAUSE, a non-profit which enhances higher education through information technology.
