Automating story development
for the UIC News Bureau

Client

The Office of Public Affairs distributes news about research breakthroughs at UIC.

Challenge

UIC had an arcane, paper-based system of story development. They wanted to replace this with an online application to streamline the process for releasing stories to a variety of on-line and off-line media outlets as well as the general public.

Solution

OJC designed and programmed a web application where the general public may read news releases about the university, the news media may search for interesting story leads or contacts for university experts, and university staff may develop and release news stories. It includes pages for inputting and editing stories and for automating a complex editorial review procedure. By using the web for what it does best, OJC developed a powerful tool to coordinate collaborative writing processes between people in multiple locations, while eliminating cumbersome, repetitive work.

Technology

Database programming, Usability Engineering, Perl, CGI
